Large Whelk

This Large Whelk is a member of the Sinistrofulgur genus of large sea snails with left-handed coiling.  Relatively late on the fossil record among mollusks, this species dates back to the Oligocene period spanning 33.9 to 23 million years ago.  We appreciate the lovely shells left behind by these inhabitants of the shallow coastal waters of the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico.
